Bunion Surgery

Bunion (Hallux Valgus) Surgery, advice and treatment

Bunions or hallux valgus are a very common progressive condition, worsening with time and affecting both males and females. We have been performing surgical correction of bunions for over 30 years. They are always unsightly, frequently painful and widen the foot causing shoe-fitting issues. Patients are normally very happy when: pain is relieved, the toe is straighter and giving a more pleasing aesthetic / cosmetic appearance, and the patient can then have a wider range of footwear options.

Associated conditions such as hammertoes, can also be corrected at the same time.

The Procedure

Sometimes a simple bump removal maybe all that is required on the side of the joint to reduce the prominence.  For more moderate to severe bunions the joint is realigned by “osteotomies” where the bones each side of the joint are cut and repositioned to narrow the foot and straighten the big-toe joint.  Many patients can have both feet corrected at the same time. You can weight-bear after the surgery in a walker-boot, to be worn for four weeks.  After this, loose fitting footwear is permitted until swelling and discomfort resolves.

Anaesthesia and Pain Relief

We mostly perform bunion corrections as a day-case procedure, under a local anaesthetic, which can be combined with oral sedation.  We can also provide a full general anaesthetic (going to sleep), if requested.  You will be prescribed a combination of strong prescription pain killers, as a result only around 5% of patients suffer severe pain after the surgery.  Our specialist anaesthetic techniques provide safe, accurate and effective nerve block anaesthesia and excellent pain-relief. We also normally prescribe antibiotics to reduce the risks of infection.  If you could be at risk of a DVT - deep vein thrombosis (vein clot), we will prescribe anticoagulants for one to two weeks.

Our outpatient centre at number 25 Harley St offers a full range of diagnostic tests and investigations on-site including x-rays, MRI scans, CT and ultrasound scans with our expert team of radiographers and radiology doctors.

Treatment is now safer, very effective and carries fewer complications for patients.
